Disabled Subway Riders? Really?
July 17, 2008 | Posted by Kiki
On my way to work one day last week, I had found a seat and settled in to read my magazine when I was disturbed. Not just a normal disturbance, a really rude, incessant shoulder-tapping disturbance.
Finally I looked up into the face of a woman who obviously didn’t realize that much make-up doesn’t cover up the fact that you’re old. She’s coming closer and closer to me practically shouting ‘disabled! disabled! you have to give me your seat!’.
‘WTF is she talking about?’ I thought to myself as I look around at the faces looking down on me. ‘Am I really in a disabled seat… wait, are there disabled seats on subways? It’s only on buses…’
I still haven’t said a word.
‘Do you want to look at my badge?’ she yells as she shoves some plastic wrapped thing in my face. I realize that under her other arm is a long-haired dauchsaund who has the same look on its’ face as I do. I feel bad for it considering it has to live with her, and stand up to let her sit down.
The whole thing pissed me off mainly because if she had simply said, ‘hey, my leg hurts would you mind…’ I would have gladly given up my seat.
